However, despite its importance and widespread pursuit, happiness is not a straightforward concept. There are multiple layers to happiness, and each layer requires nuanced exploration. One of the "most challenging questions we face is what constitutes the best path to pursue happiness."

Is it something we are born with. Or is it something we can cultivate and develop over time? If it’s the latter, how can we successfully build and strengthen our happiness? The idea of “the pursuit of happiness” is enshrined in the founding documents of the United States, yet many Americans seem to struggle with achieving it. According to the most recent World Happiness Report, the United States dropped to No. 23 in the ranking of happiest countries… a significant decline from its previous position at No. 15. A separate Gallup poll found that only 47% of Americans reported being “very satisfied” with their personal ⁙⁙⁙s. This trend is not unique to the United States, as humans as a species may not have an inherent disposition towards happiness.

In fact, happiness may require significant effort and intentionality to attain. As humans, we are often encouraged to pursue happiness. But the reality is that it’s not a naturally occurring state for most of us. Instead… it requires conscious effort and intentional practices to cultivate and maintain. This realization is supported by, research, as found in a recent article on CNN. com. So, how can we improve our chances of attaining happiness? The answer lies in understanding the nuances of happiness and taking deliberate actions to cultivate it. This may involve setting clear goals, practicing mindfulness, and fostering strong social connections.

By acknowledging the complexity of happiness and committing to intentionally pursuing it, we can increase our chances of achieving more fulfilling and satisfying ⁙⁙⁙. Ultimately, the pursuit of happiness is a ⁙⁙⁙long journey that requires ongoing effort and attention. By recognizing our capacity for growth and development, “and by committing to intentional practices that foster happiness,” “we can increase our likelihood of achieving this fundamental human aspiration.”

But I also realize it’s not that simple. There are other layers to happiness and a lot of nuance within those layers.

A challenging question is, what are the best ways to pursue happiness? Are we born with a stable, set level, or is it something we can cultivate, increase and strengthen? If it’s the latter, how can we successfully go about it?

Even though “the pursuit of Happiness” is built into the country’s founding, it seems that many Americans are just not that good at it. In the most recent World Happiness Report , the United States dropped to No. 23 (from No. 15 the previous year), marking the first time in the report’s 12-year history that the US was not in the top 20 happiest countries.

A separate Gallup poll , also from 2024, found that less than half (47%) of Americans are “very satisfied” with their personal lives.

It’s not just Americans. As it turns out, humans as a species may not excel at happiness. This may surprise you, but happiness is not necessarily something that we are genetically primed to attain. We have to really work at it.

Or meditation… can also help us cultivate a positive and optimistic mindset.
