Five guides for improving architectural wellbeing have been published in response to key discoveries from a major research project on the wellbeing of architects.

TheGuides to Wellbeing in Architecture Practice were officially launched at The Wellbeing of Architects symposium, a two-day fringe event of the Australian Institute of Architects 2024 Australian Architecture Conference in May.

The guides address five factors impacting wellbeing at work: Value andWorth, Time and Money, Trust and Transparency, Risk and Responsibility, and Psychosocial and Psychological Safety. Lead project researcher Naomi Stead said the factors were all in some ways interrelated to time and the management of resources to complete projects.

⁘We already know that architecture has a long hours culture [⁘] but one thing we found quite interesting is how frequently it happens,⁘ saidStead. ⁘[⁘] I would say that it’s pretty normal in professional roles to work longer than your contracted hours, every now and again, possibly even monthly, but doing it weekly or daily, that tells us there’s something systemic going on here where people are working a lot more than their paid hours.⁘

After conducting the initial survey in 2021 during a time dominated by COVID-19 lockdowns, the research team anticipated better results from the 2023 survey. Surprisingly, the results did not reveal the expected improvement. Respondents recorded a decline in their average wellbeing score from 67 in 2021 to 60 in 2023. While the national average total wellbeing score in 2022, according to the Australian Unity Personal Wellbeing Index, was 74.

In comparing other considerable differences between 2021 and 2023, respondents reflected a significant decline in their professional commitment and personal performance standards. This was matched by a decrease in career optimism, career support and career satisfaction.
