The World Health Organization projects that the global population of individuals aged 65 and older will nearly double by 2050, reaching 2.1 billion individuals. Despite there being no cure for dementia, researchers are actively working to prevent its onset. According to research published by the WHO in 2023, even though age ⁘⁘⁘ the strongest known risk factor for dementia, a set of 12 potentially modifiable risk factors has been identified.

As reported in The Lancet Commission’s 2020 report, these 12 factors account for approximately 40% of global dementia cases, “and could theoretically be prevented or delayed.”.. according to The Lancet.
