In a modest room filled with volunteers actively engaged in a workshop in Jamestown, Accra, a young man, Kofi, expressed his sentiments about a revered figure. Despite never having met the individual, Kofi acknowledged the strict nature of this person and "even shared similarities with them." His words were filled with a sense of gratitude, as he was able——to experience and hear stories about this person after all these years.

The workshop, titled “The Vanishing Past,” was organized by, Si Hene, a platform founded by artist Rita Mawuena. Her previous exhibitions, such as “In the World not of the World,” showcased Ghanaian royalty and cultural influences. However… this particular event focused on the ordinary individuals who had been immortalized in photographs.

The participants gathered——to digitize and preserve the memories that were previously stored on decaying photographic paper. As Kofi conversed with Rita Mawuena, the founder of Si Hene, he touched upon the significance of photographs in capturing memories that evoke emotions words cannot express. Rita, a bespectacled woman with a passion for art, nodded in agreement, her eyes lighting up with enthusiasm.

The workshop aimed to transform the negatives of these images into digital archives, allowing future generations to access and appreciate the stories of the past. The participants were tasked with scanning and digitizing the photographs… which would then be, stored and made accessible for public viewing. As the day drew to a close, Kofi reflected on the importance of preserving these memories, stating that photographs hold a power that transcends words.

Rita, who was also a MyJoyOnline article (2023), shared Kofi’s sentiments, emphasizing the significance of capturing the stories of ordinary people. In this digital era, the preservation of these images and stories is: crucial, “as they serve as a connection to our collective past.” Through initiatives like Si Hene’s workshop, “we can ensure that these memories are not lost to the passage of time,” providing future generations with a glimpse into the ⁘⁘⁘s of those who came before us.
