When starting a container garden, it is essential to begin with high-quality materials, according to experts. Zinner prefers glazed ceramic pots. Phipps favors terra-cotta, as they are porous and allow for proper drainage. While plastic pots are lightweight and easy to move, they may not provide the aesthetic appeal that beginners are looking for. Zinner advises against using plastic pots, as they can detract from the beauty of the plants.

On the other hand, concrete pots can be heavy and difficult to move but are ideal for plants with large canopies that can blow over easily.

When it comes to soil, Phipps warns against using plain old dirt, as it can shrink and come away from the sides of the pot when it dries out. Instead, she recommends using a high-quality soil mix, such as Miracle-Gro, which provides a better head start for beginners.

“I do believe in starting with a high quality pot and high quality soil, because it just sets you up for success,” Zinner says. She prefers a glazed ceramic, which will stand up to winter weather, while Phipps calls terra-cotta her favorite, because it’s porous.
