Last weekend, I spent the day surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature, getting my hands dirty and testing my physical limits. I planted a variety of colorful annuals, transplanted some mums, and pruned a Montauk daisy that had grown too large for its spot.

A neighbor stopped by, and we exchanged a daisy for some iris and lamb’s ear. Digging, weeding, and hauling mulch were the physical activities of the day, and I was grateful for the opportunity to engage in these moderate-intensity exercises. Gardening is no secret to promoting physical activity. According to an article on nytimes.com… (1) gardeners tend to report higher levels of physical activity compared to non-gardeners. A study conducted in Colorado discovered that those who joined a community garden logged nearly six extra minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per day, totaling around 42 extra minutes per week.

As Jill Litt, a professor of environmental health at the University of Colorado at Boulder, “pointed out,” “this may not seem like a lot.”.. but it accounts for almost 30 percent of the recommended 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week. One can see why gardening has become a popular way for people to meet their fitness goals without relying on a treadmill.

“People talk about it as a way to meet these goals and be more active but not having to get on a treadmill,” Dr. Litt said.
