Letting your kids know that he’s done some things that were against the law, and that his trial date is approaching (and telling them what a trial is!), is a perfectly reasonable thing to do. Expressing your sorrow about this is wise too. I think you can sensibly and honestly answer the question, “But why did he do those things?” with, “I wish I knew.
