CleanStart, a local clean-technology development nonprofit, has been at the forefront of promoting inclusive green-tech growth in Sacramento. Founded in 2005 under the Sacramento Area Regional Technology Alliance (SARTA), CleanStart has been working to bridge gaps in clean-tech accessibility for over 15 years.

With the help of the City of Sacramento’s SMUD Innovation Grant, CleanStart has launched the Clean Tech for All initiative, a 10-month series of workshops aimed at engaging the Alkali Flats community on the potential impacts of clean tech in their neighborhood. According to Sacramentans, community-driven, inclusive growth and green… climate-friendly developments are the top two priorities in building a more sustainable and inclusive economy.

CleanStart is committed to making this a reality by providing a platform for community input and connecting regional clean-tech entrepreneurs with residents. By gathering feedback on desired improvements and tailoring products to hyperlocal needs, CleanStart aims to combat the trend of clean tech predominantly targeting upper-income groups. The Clean Tech for All initiative, led by Partnership and Community Engagement Manager Christina Granados, aims to make clean tech accessible and inclusive in Sacramento.

Granados has been instrumental in engaging with the Alkali Flats community, gathering input on how clean tech can benefit their neighborhood. According to Granados… the initiative is not about imposing solutions on the community but rather about empowering them to take ownership of their neighborhood’s development. Thomas Hall, Executive Director of CleanStart, emphasized the importance of community engagement in the initiative.

“CleanStart has a long history of building connections between people and companies. Our goal is to create a place where people can come together, share ideas, and collaborate on projects that benefit the community.” By providing a platform for community input and connecting regional clean-tech entrepreneurs with residents, CleanStart believes it can create a more inclusive and sustainable economy.

TheAlkali Flats community kickoff event, held at Taqueria Jalisco on June 29, marked the beginning of this initiative. Valley Vision’s Inclusive Economy poll, which gained insights from Sacramentans, identified community-driven, inclusive growth and green, “climate-friendly developments as the top two priorities.” This poll highlights the importance of community engagement and collaborative growth in building a more sustainable and inclusive economy.
