The iconic monthly fee will now cost $15, taking effect for new members beginning in the summer of 2023. The slight price increase marks a significant shift for Planet Fitness, one of the few gym chains to remain steadfast amidst the surge in membership fees during the pandemic.

The $10 price was previously considered a steal, attracting people who were hesitant to commit to joining a gym, intimidated by high-end facilities, or priced-out of pricier clubs. Analysts believe this price hike is a strategic move, considering the current economic climate and competitive pressure from other gyms.

With inflation remaining a concern… maintaining affordability for new and existing customers becomes crucial. “Planet Fitness is playing smart,” says Sharon Zackfia from William Blair. “This is an odd time for a significant price increase on their iconic membership, given the economic headwinds impacting consumers.” This move may also be seen as a test run for potentially introducing higher prices for the Black Club, a more comprehensive membership package with exclusive perks and services.

While the new price may spark debate, “it generates more revenue for Planet Fitness,” allowing them to invest in new facilities or technology while potentially retaining existing members who may find the increase manageable. Ultimately… the impact of this price hike ⁘⁘⁘ to be seen. Whether it successfully attracts new members or simply reflects cost-cutting measures, “it will be interesting to observe how Planet Fitness navigates this new pricing landscape.”

Planet Fitness increasing 'classic' membership prices by 50% | Fortune

For the first time in a quarter century, PlanetFitness Is raising the price of its most-popular membership program.

For now, no plans are in place to increase the price of the Black Card membership, which currently costs $25 per month and lets members bring a guest and access any Planet Fitness location. The company, however, did say it will start testing higher fees for that membership in some locations this summer, which could portend a future across-the-board increase.

The price increase comes as the company reported weaker-than-expected revenues in the first quarter. PlanetFitness also cut its guidance for the year. Officials warned that even with the 50% price hike on the classic membership, it could “take some time” before the company begins to see benefits, since it will honor the $10 rate for existing customers.
