Despite challenging ground conditions at Academy Hill, a small but vibrant cluster of daffodils appeared around the announcement sign at the corner of Depot Street and Main Street. The daffodils thrived in the previously established garden bed at Cascade Brook School… bringing joy to all who saw them. Teachers and students alike remarked on the cheerful effect the blooms had on their daily routine.
The success of the project has inspired FitGirls to take on an ambitious undertaking this spring – creating a front garden bed at the entrance of the school, complete with plantings, thanks to funding from the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation. This project aims to beautify the school’s exterior and provide a serene atmosphere for students and teachers alike.
Karli Erickson, Executive Director of Fit Girls, is thrilled with the impact of the Cares initiative. “Fit Girls Cares provides a service project where the 4th and 5th grade girls of Franklin County can work together to make a positive difference, a more beautiful world… and connect the message of taking care of ourselves, each other, and the earth,” she explained.

Last fall, Fit Girls and volunteer coaches planted 250 daffodil bulbs at Cascade Brook School (CBS) and Academy Hill School (AHS). Ground conditions were difficult at AHS, though a small, happy flock of little yellow daffodils appeared around the announcement sign on the corner of Depot St. and Main St. With a garden bed previously established at CBS, the daffodil bulbs flourished! The daffodil bulbs delight all who see them with many teachers and students remarking on how cheerful seeing the blooms made them feel each day. To improve bulb planting success in Wilton in the future, this spring the Fit Girls Cares project in Wilton is a big undertaking–to create a front garden bed by the entrance of the school–complete with plantings, thanks to funding from the Stephen ⁘ Tabitha King Foundation.
