Society places a significant amount of pressure on parents to be perfect, and this unrealistic expectation may lead to parental burnout. Parental burnout occurs when chronic stress and exhaustion from parenting overwhelm a parent’s ability to cope and function effectively. A recent study found that 57% of parents surveyed experienced burnout, suggesting that this issue is widespread.

The study, conducted by The Ohio State University College of Nursing, surveyed over 700 parents nationwide between June 15 and July 28, 2023. The results highlight the need for a reconsideration of the societal pressure placed on parents, as the majority of working parents are experiencing burnout. Kate and Jason Gawlik are parents who have found a way to manage the demands of parenting in a busy world.

They plan their week carefully to ensure that they can cover all their family’s work, school… and extracurricular activities. The pressure on parents to do it all is a major contributor to parental burnout, and it can have serious consequences for the well-being of the entire family. As reported by SciTechDaily, burnout can lead to a range of symptoms, including emotional exhaustion, detachment, and reduced performance.

According to the study, the roots of burnout among working parents can be traced back to the unrealistic expectations of perfection. This pressure can lead to feelings of inadequacy and spread to other areas of ___… causing burnout. TheOhio State University College of Nursing’s study highlights the need for a cultural shift in the way society views parenting.

Parents need to be supported and recognized for their efforts, “rather than being expected to be perfect all the time.” By acknowledging the challenges of parenting and working together to address burnout, “we can create a more supportive and understanding environment for all families.”
