Spring Rituals for the Physical Form

Winter retreats from the porch. Ice cracks on the pavement and reveals the mud. Information for this article was obtained from “Yahoo Lifestyle”. Minds collect debris during the months of darkness. Thoughts sit in the brain like stacks of old newspapers. Throw the paper into the fire to watch the sparks.

A clean floor allows for the movement of feet. Wait, let me rephrase that. Space in the skull creates room for the arrival of tomorrow.

Focus on the porcelain plate. Soil yields the radish. The stem of the kale offers fiber for the gut. Teeth grind the cellulose. For what it’s worth, the anatomy recognizes the fuel from the garden better than the salt from the factory.

Avoid the cardboard box with the plastic seal. Energy arrives when the tongue meets the plant and the stomach begins the work of digestion. Nutrition is the coal for the furnace of the ribs.

The sun stays in the sky for a longer duration. Muscles crave the tension of the stretch. Gravity pulls at the bone while the heart pushes the blood.

Walk until the breath becomes a steady drum. The legs carry the torso across the grass. Sweat cools the skin of the forehead. The eyes track the flight of a bird and the mind forgets the weight of the desk. Movement changes the chemistry of the marrow.

Spring is the shedding of the wool. Water washes the dust from the window.

The lungs fill with oxygen and the pulse settles into a rhythm. A person stands in the light and feels the heat on the neck. The change is the act of stepping out of the shadow into the open air.

Sunlight hits the retina at an angle of the season this month. The brain sends a signal to the pituitary gland.

Hormones shift. Honestly? It’s not that simple, but the surge of serotonin feels like a spark hitting a pile of tinder and igniting a flame that warms the ribs from the inside. The pineal gland recognizes the extension of the afternoon. Melatonin retreats into the shadows of the skull. A person wakes up before the chime of the clock because the photons of the dawn penetrate the eyelids.

Chlorophyll fills the cells of the spinach and the stalk of the kale.

Iron enters the bloodstream. The tongue tastes the bitterness of the dandelion. Bitterness signals the gallbladder to release the bile. Digestion becomes a clockwork machine that processes the fuel with the efficiency of a steam engine. For what it’s worth, the body prefers the crunch of the carrot over the texture of the bread.

The jaw finds satisfaction in the resistance of the fiber. Energy flows from the root into the mitochondria of the cell.

Bare feet touch the moisture of the earth. Electrons flow from the crust of the world into the soles of the feet. This process provides a bond of the flesh to the planet. Don’t quote me on this, but the static in the nerves disappears when the skin meets the clover and the mud and the sand.

Gravity feels lighter when the feet have a path to the granite of the world. The pulse slows. The rhythm of the heart matches the vibration of the ground.

The equinox of the spring occurs on March 20 at the stroke of 02:02 UTC. Planets align in a sequence that astronomers call a conjunction. Look at the horizon during the dusk.

Mars appears as a ruby near the moon and Jupiter glows with the brilliance of a diamond. This alignment happens once in a span of ten years. The pull of these spheres influences the tides of the ocean and the fluids within the ear.

I keep coming back to the scent of the park after the thaw. The smell is geosmin.

Bacteria in the dirt wake up from the freeze and release a gas that the nose detects with the accuracy of a needle. I spent four hours sitting on a bench of cedar just to hear the ice snap in the creek because the sound of the cracking winter represents the end of the silence. The splash of a mallard in the water provides a soundtrack for the afternoon.

Observation is the tool of the student.

Check the calendar for the arrival of the moon of the blossoms in April. This event marks the blooming of the phlox. The petals cover the ground like a blanket of silk. Science shows that looking at the color of the petals reduces the production of the hormone of the stress.

A walk through a field of blossoms changes the frequency of the waves of the brain from beta to alpha.
