The heatwave that has gripped the city has forced many individuals to seek refuge in public spaces and shaded parks, as they struggle to cope with the extreme temperatures. For some, community donations and local shelters have provided a —line, offering a temporary reprieve from the scorching heat. According to April, a resident of the affected area, “there are good people in this community that set to band together.

We see their generosity. Most of us aren’t trying to sit here and be out here for a —time, you know? A situation kind of like ours, I think there needs to be more resources. I personally think there should be a little bit more.” Great Falls Rescue Mission director Jim McCormick acknowledged the challenges the community is facing, stating that “we’ve always had the adage – if somebody comes in seeking a glass of water or a bottle of water or something like that… we try and take care of anybody and everybody that comes through the doors.” He emphasized that most shelters are full due to the lack of resources to accommodate more individuals.

Local organizations have played a critical role in providing support to those most vulnerable in the sweltering conditions. Community members looking to help can make a difference by donating supplies such as bottled water and food, volunteering time at centers like the Great Falls Rescue Mission or the Angel Room, and providing financial support.

April highlighted the importance of community involvement… suggesting that “they just need to help the little, small areas with donations and generosity. If they could do a little bit more volunteer work, “maybe they’d be able to open one more day at the Angel Room.” That could help a lot.” She emphasized the need for collective action to address the pressing issue, adding that “if there was a little bit more help, “there wouldn’t be so many people struggling.”” As the city continues to struggle with the heatwave, it is essential to recognize the crucial role that local organizations and community members play in providing support.

By coming together to address this issue, we can work towards ensuring that everyone has access to the resources they need to stay safe and comfortable. The original article was first published in “KRTV NEWS Great Falls”.
