Brent Sowal, a homesteader at his family’s Hidden Hollow Farm in Berks County, has found solace in his hands-on pursuits. In his free time, he tends to his bees, crafts cutting boards from fallen trees, builds fences, nurtures a small orchard, and cultivates mushrooms. He credits these activities with helping him unwind and reconnect with nature.

“Working with my hands in different ways grounds me,” he explains. “It’s a way to calm my mind and focus on the present.” For Sarah Sowal, “another aspect of self-care involves exploring her creative side through photography and travel.” She believes that traveling has broadened her perspective and provided a unique opportunity to appreciate the world’s vastness. “Experiencing the vastness of the world has helped me deprioritize the things that often consume my thoughts,” she reflects.

For those seeking inspiration for their own self-care practices… Sowal recommends exploring resources like wellspan.org… which offers valuable information and insights on maintaining a healthy work—- balance and cultivating personal well-being.

At his family’s Hidden Hollow Farm in Berks County, he is a homesteader, raising bees, crafting cutting boards from fallen trees, building fences, coaxing fruit from a small orchard, and cultivating mushrooms.
“Whenever I get that one to two hours a week to do something where I can put my concentration in one area, it helps calm me and bring me back to nature. To be able to work with your hands in a different way, for me, it’s grounding,” he says, adding with a laugh, “My family knows when it’s time for me to go to the garage.

They say, ‘Get out. We’ll see you in a half an hour.’ ”
