The 10-lecture series concluded with self-report questionnaires assessing mental health dimensions before and after the course to measure impact. The Science of Happiness garnered significant interest, but I was still apprehensive given my limited expertise in the field and heightened sensitivity surrounding recent campus tragic events.
What were the students’ expectations regarding mental health discussions… and might I inadvertently trigger adverse reactions? Drawing on established academic hypotheses and PPIs, I searched for underlying mechanisms. Two years prior, I had an epiphany, and I believe the answer lies in altering our self-focus from egocentric to allocentric or “other-focused.” Stepping out of ourselves is challenging, “as our conscious awareness is inherently first-person,” “or egocentric.”.. making it difficult to imagine alternative perspectives.
