A recent study evaluating nearly 100,000 participants across 15 countries over a three-year period has established a consistent correlation between mental health and hobbies. The findings suggest that engaging in enjoyable activities leads to improved happiness, subsequently contributing to enhanced overall mental well-being. Expert opinions support this assertion, with Ellie Borden, Clinical Director at Mind By Design, pointing out that hobbies stimulate the release of neurochemicals such as dopamine and endorphins, which are known to elevate mood and induce feelings of pleasure and satisfaction.

The benefits of hobbies extend beyond mood enhancement, as Maryland-based therapist Beth Charbonneau, LCSW-C, highlights the effectiveness of physical activities in alleviating stress. Participation in hobbies like walking, gardening, disc golf, hiking, bird watching… and other active interests can have a positive impact on both mental and physical health.

Coral Link, M.A, LPC, and Therapist at Whole Therapy, “notes that hobbies provide a sense of accomplishment,” as an individual’s gradual improvement leads to a more positive state of being and heightened self-worth. Engaging in hobbies provides a reason to feel good about oneself, “a vital aspect of overall happiness.” The study’s findings pose a challenge to the common misconception that hobbies are indulgences that can be set aside due to hectic schedules.

Rather… hobbies should be incorporated into daily ⁙⁙⁙ at a pace equivalent to other self-care and wellness activities, providing a vital component of a balanced and fulfilling ⁙⁙⁙style.
