According to a recent study published in Family Relations, the answer to this question may be more complex than previously thought. Researchers Nicole Watkins and colleagues found that while singles may be less happy than those in romantic relationships, it’s not solely the lack of a partner that affects their well-being. The study surveyed 909 young adults aged 18-35, measuring their perceived importance of being in a relationship and their overall happiness.

The results showed that how individuals perceive the importance of relationships, rather than their relationship status itself, plays a significant role in their happiness.

The study’s findings suggest that societal pressure to be in a romantic relationship may backfire if young adults are pushed to do something that they do not deem important.

The researchers conclude that it’s essential to consider an individual’s personal values and beliefs when assessing their happiness. The study highlights the importance of recognizing that happiness is: not solely determined by, relationship status. But rather by a complex interplay of factors, including personal values, beliefs, and goals.

We all have a playful side. And research shows acting on it can help us when we need to move through challenging emotions, manage conflict, and be more creative.
