Were you aware that hanging upside down isn’t a practice reserved only for bats? Sir Tom Jones, the legendary singer and coach on The Voice, has been an advocate of the unconventional exercise known as ‘inversion therapy,’ which is used to improve ‘poor circulation’ and alleviate back problems.
Scientists have vouched for the practice too, with one study in 2013 suggesting that suspension at ’60 degrees’ reduced back pain across a 47-person study group in just eight weeks. ⁘Practicing inversion therapy may also translate to better flexibility,⁘ experts at Healthline added.
⁘Inversion therapy is also thought to improve posture. This might be especially helpful if you work at a desk.⁘ Tragically, Sir TomJones has had his fair share of health issues. As reported by Hello! , the iconic Welsh singer revealed he experienced a persistent ‘dull ache’ in his hip back in 2017, which led to him undergoing a hip replacement.
He later admitted to BBC Radio 2 that he had gained excess weight but successfully slimmed down after altering his diet. At the time, his new regimen included lean meats, fish, vegetables, and nuts.
⁘I was putting too much weight on. I didn’t think I was going to and I left the working out for a bit, thought I’d keep a check on it,⁘ he said at the time. ⁘But with the Christmas puddings and cakes, before I knew it I was 230lb (16.4 stone) which was 30lb more than I should be. I couldn’t get into my suits.⁘
Beyond inversion therapy, it’s been said that Sir Tom has also dedicated himself to regular stretching and boxing sessions, with the guidance of a personal trainer.
